We've been called out to redo patios that were only a few years old and perfectly well built. Nothing had failed — they just weren't being used, because nobody worked out how the space would function before it was poured. Here's what to settle first.
Start with the furniture, not the square footage. A six-seat dining table needs roughly a 12-by-12-foot area once chairs are pulled back and someone walks behind them. A lounge set around a fire table needs more like 14 feet across. Sketch the furniture you actually own onto the plan — a patio sized by budget instead of by furniture is the most common reason one goes unused.
Then find the afternoon sun. A west-facing patio in the South Bay gets full, low sun from mid-afternoon until sunset — exactly when you want to be outside. If west is your only option, plan shade from the beginning: a pergola for filtered shade against the house, or a gazebo for a full roof over a freestanding seating area.
Third, think about the path from the kitchen. Every meal outside means carrying plates through a door and across the yard. Patios connected directly to the back door get used several times a week; the ones at the far end of the yard get used when there's company. A paver or concrete walkway, or stepping pads set in turf, makes the trip easy.
Fourth, decide what the ground cover will be. Turf gives you green, soft space for kids and dogs without the water bill, and it pairs well with stepping pads and paver borders. Raised planter boxes or a stacked-stone planter wall bring in real plants at a height that's easy to tend.
Fifth, plan the edges. A new fence, a privacy screen beside the patio, and lighting on steps and walls are what make a backyard feel finished and usable after dark. They're far easier to build in during the project than to add later.

There's also the part you don't see: the patio has to slope slightly away from the house, retaining walls need drainage behind them, and turf needs a free-draining base. Get the planning and the groundwork right, and the rest is straightforward.
