If your patio sits empty every afternoon, the problem usually isn't the patio — it's the sun. A shade structure fixes that, and the two we're asked about most are pergolas and gazebos. They solve the same problem in different ways.
A pergola has posts, beams, and an open roof of slats or lattice. It gives filtered shade — cooler than full sun, but still bright — and makes a patio feel like an outdoor room. Pergolas work especially well attached to the back of the house, over the patio you step out onto.
A gazebo has a solid roof. That means full shade, protection from light rain, and a true covered room for a dining set, a sectional, or an outdoor kitchen. Hardtop gazebos with a metal roof are a popular choice because they hold up well to sun and weather, and many come with curtains and netting for extra privacy.
From Our Projects

Placement usually makes the decision for you. If the seating area is right against the house, a pergola fits naturally. If you want a destination out in the yard — a lounge on its own patio, surrounded by turf — a gazebo is the better fit.
Think about how much light you want indoors, too. A solid gazebo roof right outside a window will darken the room behind it; a pergola lets more light through.
Whichever you choose, the structure is only as good as what it stands on. Posts need proper footings or a slab thick enough to anchor them, and the patio underneath has to be level and drain away from the house. We build the concrete pad or paver patio and the shade structure together, so everything lines up.
A shade structure also pairs naturally with the rest of a backyard: turf around the patio, stepping pads leading to it, and a planter wall or privacy screen alongside. Planning it all at once keeps the heights, materials, and drainage working together.
