It's the first question on almost every patio or driveway estimate: pavers or concrete? Because we build both, we can give you a straight answer — and the honest one is that it depends on your yard, your budget, and how long you plan to stay.
Start with the ground. Much of the soil under South Bay and Tri-Valley homes is expansive clay. It swells when it's wet in winter and shrinks as it dries in summer, every year. A concrete slab is one rigid piece sitting on that movement. Control joints give it a place to crack, but they only guide the cracking — they don't stop it.
Pavers handle the same ground differently. They're individual units on a compacted aggregate base with sand between them, so when the soil moves, the surface flexes instead of fracturing. If a section ever settles, we lift those stones, fix the base, and set the same stones back. Done well, you can't tell where the repair was.
From Our Projects

Stains follow the same logic. Oil on a concrete driveway is there for good. On pavers, you replace the few stones it soaked into — which is why we always suggest keeping a small stack of spares from your original pallet.
Concrete has real advantages, too. It costs less per square foot, it goes in faster, and a well-finished slab looks clean and modern — especially with a broom finish and saw-cut joints laid out on a deliberate grid. Large concrete stepping pads set in turf are one of the most popular looks we build right now.
Where concrete struggles is repair. Patches rarely match, and a cracked slab usually means cutting out and re-pouring a section. That's why joint layout and base preparation matter so much — they're what keep a slab looking good for decades.
Our rule of thumb: for a driveway you'll park on for years, or a patio where you want pattern and color, pavers usually win over the long run. For a clean, modern patio, a side-yard walk, or a gazebo pad on a budget, well-built concrete is a great choice.
